Quite often, I will listen to the same song on repeat for several hours. Is this strange? Mrs. Elbeno thinks I'm certifiable. Maybe I am, but I don't think for my musical habits.

In case you are wondering, songs which I have employed thusly include:

Toxic – Britney Spears
Lonely Rolling Star – from the Katamari Damacy Soundtrack
Who Am I – from Les Miserables
Harder Better Faster Stronger – Daft Punk
In A Party Mood – Jack Strachey (the themetune to “Housewive's Choice” on Radio 2)
Freestyler – Bomfunk MCs
Fantaisie-Impromptu in C Sharp Minor – Chopin

Make of that what you will.

  1. I only consider it odd in that I consider my own habits odd. I do this, too, but more often for a month or more at a time. It's very rare that I love any new music, so when I find something, it's all I ever want to hear, and I've often made CDs with one song on them for the car ride, so it'll just loop, and occasionally I've made them with the same song 10 or more times on it. This is the same in all things in my life. I tend to eat the same thing for lunch for several months at a time, and dinner, too, for that matter. I also pick up hobbies for several months and then don't revisit them again for a year or more. This is what happened to last year's electronics. I just cleaned up that desk and want to get back into it again now. We'll see what happens.

I tend to fall in love with songs that have a great, crisp, feel-good melody, or a sweet or powerful synchopated rhythm, or some difficult, high-speed lyrics, which can sometimes include rap songs, as long as they're happy and friendly 🙂 Songs with fast-paced lists in them are always candidate (Animaniacs countries/states/ingredients, “Hardware Store” by Weird Al, the acappella version of all the elements, etc).

What this repetition leads to is spaces in my life that are defined by one song, and occasionally a single album. Often, this means I don't want to hear these songs ever again, because though I don't like change, and I do love retro 80's things, I do get a little sad at the prospect of revisiting the past in such a powerful way. It's fine to revisit childhood sometimes, especially the happiest memories, but usually the songs I've overdone for myself just bring me back to things like sitting in LA traffic, or wasting away in some office somewhere 🙂
