It&#8217;s from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/uk\/2007\/mar\/01\/topstories3.books\">Guardian<\/a>. And it&#8217;s based on a poll from World Book Day 2007.<br \/>\nSecond, since it&#8217;s based on a poll, it reflects <em>popular<\/em> books, so I&#8217;m not sure why there seems to be a persistent myth that the average person has read only 6. Probably a ruse to make the meme spread as everyone feels superior.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, it seems there are a bunch of books on there that are good, and I will probably read some. I have read about a quarter of the list and I own several on the list that I haven&#8217;t yet read. In particular, I should make another attempt at each of the following, which I have tried before and failed to make much headway in:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Count of Monte Cristo (Mrs. Elbeno&#8217;s favourite book)<\/li>\n<li>Crime and Punishment<\/li>\n<li>Rebecca<\/li>\n<li>Anything by C.
