Battle of the Bands

8 May, 2009

The buildup started 5-6 weeks ago with band formations and rumours of entries. Then came the posters stuck up across the campus advertising the various bands. Finally, at 5pm today it all kicked off – the second annual Blizzard Battle of the Bands. When I worked at EA, we had…

Stellarium is brilliant

8 October, 2008

Stellarium really is a first-class piece of software. It makes me wish I lived somewhere where I could see more than half a dozen stars. One of these days, when mini-Elbeno is older, we’ll have to make a midnight trip out to the desert to do some astronomy. West LA…

Project Euler

11 August, 2007

I’ve just discovered Project Euler (from Osfameron, via Planet Haskell). This seems like great fodder for recreational mathematics and Haskell programming. Some of the simpler questions I might even co-opt for interviews (I have been known to ask the interview question “How many trailing zeroes has 100!” which has a…

You, sir, are as they say 'teh winz'! First one out of the gate, my good Elbeno, and an inspiration to us all! HAZZAH!

First, I must say that I am impressed to find your desk both neat and holding all the necessary items: cool thermometer, chapstick, random passnumber generator for work, headphones for jamming during naptime, and small playthings for little hands and mouth. You're a regular boyscout!

Second, you are much MUCH better looking than your icon or your Mii, which at first doesn't sound like much but my other friend's Mii looks JUST LIKE HER and that ain't the best thing, if you get my drift. Congratulations on being cuter than a video game chara! (I will also admit -but don't tell Gary – that I have a weakness for scruffy so *thumbs up*.)

Third, I am friending your flickr YAY! (You do not need to friend me back: heaven's knows you must get enough of me just through lj!)

Well, it's only a photo, but in defense of my artistic skills, it took me over a dozen tries to get the appropriate expression and a decent exposure. Bright sunshine outside.

Re the desk – if you had some sort of device for x-raying photographs (how cool would that be?) you would also see hand sanitizer, a Rubik cube, screen cleaner and an ipod. And a little carved wooden mouse is poking over the edge of the monitor behind my head.

Thanks for the compliment. I'm glad I didn't shave this morning – and I'll be sure to “go Viking” next time you're in town. You've been flickr-friended.

PS. About the Mii… I was severely hampered by hair colour choices. Did Nintendo really need to save a whole 21 bits by cutting a generic RGB pick down to six choices?
